A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
