The group have called into their homes, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge milestone," continues Alana. "However we're just thankful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The album came out of a period of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that strange transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The themes track endings and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real life who they want to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to make an effort in shutting out the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Sound

That newfound confidence required a fresh approach – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Laughter

The trio's honesty fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their dating horror stories.

One man ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Path

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their standing in the industry.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide audience.

"We have been performing since I was four," shares Alana. "There is no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
